Daily Devotions for Difficult Days [152] Saved My Soul

Todays devotion is written by Mike Loveridge

Assistant Pastor of Manor Park Church

The song for today is Saved my Soul by CityAlight. You can listen to it here.

You my God have saved my soul
I am Yours forevermore
I won't be moved of this I'm sure
You are my God and You saved my soul

I was lost when you came for me
Held in chains by the enemy
But You broke them in victory
Now I'm free, I am free

You're my joy and You are my hope
I am saved by Your grace alone
I will sing of Your love for me
I am free, I am free

You my God have saved my soul
I am Yours forevermore
I won't be moved of this I'm sure
You are my God and You saved my soul

Now I stand with the King of kings
He has paid for my every sin
And from now through eternity
I am free, I am free

You my God have saved my soul
I am Yours forevermore
I won't be moved of this I'm sure
You are my God and You saved my soul

What once was dead is now alive
You gave to me the breath of life
You brought me up out from the grave
I'm bursting out with songs of praise

I love this song and many like it that speak of the simple truth of the gospel. This song became a particular favourite of my son, Isaac, a few months ago and he would sing along to the chorus at the top of his voice (You my God have saved my soul!). As a parent, it was such a delight to hear him sing it and my prayer for him, and everyone who listens to this, is that God will be the saviour of their souls.

Let’s just spend the remainder of this devotion looking at the amazing truths of the gospel drawn out in this song.

You were lost

Many people don’t realise this, but they are wandering through life without a clue where they are going. The Bible is very clear that life has two directions with two destinations. Its either towards God and into heaven or away from God and into hell. Until you know God you are on the path to hell, aimlessly wandering through life. Yet God in his mercy reached down into our mess and found us by sending his son into the world. We were like the lost sheep of Luke 15 that the shepherd went to look for - hopelessly lost until the shepherd found and rescued them!

You are saved

How are you saved? By grace alone through faith alone in Jesus (Ephesians 2:8). The reality is that we can do nothing to earn God’s favour or to earn merit from him. All of our good deeds are but filthy rags to God. Yet there is hope because of God’s amazing love for us. Whilst we were sinners He loved us enough to send His son to die for us. That is how we are saved. There is only one way to heaven and its through faith in Jesus.

Every sin is paid for

The death of Jesus upon the cross was sufficient to pay for the sins of the whole world. If we trust in Jesus every sin that we ever have and ever will commit is paid for in full (1 Peter 3:18, Hebrews 10:10 or Romans 6:10). There is nothing too bad that the death and resurrection of Jesus cannot cover it. This is what sets us free. Not free to deliberately sin but free from the guilt of our sin because Jesus has dealt with it.

You now stand with the King of kings

Ephesians 2:6 says that we have been raised up with Christ and are seated with him in the heavenly realms. This means we are, even now, dwelling in the presence of God every day of our lives. God is forever with you, caring for you, providing for you, leading and guiding you. And each time you mess up, Jesus is there interceding for you.

You were dead but now alive

Ephesians 2:1 shows as that. Before we trusted in Jesus, we were dead in sin but the result of faith in Jesus is life, and eternal life. Jesus himself said that he came to set us free and to give us life to the full. Free from what? Free from the chains and slavery of sin.

The gospel is amazingly simple but astoundingly powerful. May you know the joy and hope of the gospel today.

Prayer for today

Gracious and loving Heavenly Father,

We thank you today for all your goodness to us and your blessings upon us. We thank you that whilst we were still sinners and far from you, you sent your Son into this world to die in our place so that we can be made right with you again.

We pray today for any who we know who don’t yet know you. We ask that you open their eyes to the awesome truth of your good news, the gospel. We ask that you may use us who do believe to be your servants here on earth to share Jesus with those around us.

Increase our love for you, our service of you and our passion to glorify you today

We ask all this in Jesus’ name,

Amen
